MDMA in South Florida Obtained from China
A package from China arriving at a Miami barber shop didn’t contain hair care products. Instead, federal inspectors at a Miami Customs warehouse found a variant of methylone, one of many synthetic chemicals sold as MDMA. In just two months, 21 similar packages had been mailed to the Heads Up Barbershop outside of Coral Gables. This spring, 28-year-old David “Sway” McConnell was arrested after a 20-month investigation and was accused of using the shop as a drop for an illegal party-pill operation.
The chemical scientifically known as 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine goes by many different names, but most people know it as MDMA or Molly. This powerful and potentially deadly drug is also known as Ecstasy. The use of MDMA and similar substances can be very dangerous and even deadly – even with the very first use.

What Is MDMA?
As stated in the previous chapter, MDMA is classified as a stimulant, but it is a stimulant with a very specific chemical structure. MDMA, also known as Molly or Ecstasy, is a manmade chemical and not a natural substance. It is also known to have strong psychedelic effects, as well as a powerful stimulant action.
As a result, those taking MDMA can experience a host of health problems, including rapid heartbeat, profuse sweating, disorientation and dangerously high body temperature. Since MDMA and drugs like it are often distributed at all night dance parties, also known as raves, users often dance non-stop – not realizing that their body temperatures have spiked dangerously or that their rapid pulse and heartbeat puts them at risk of heart attack and stroke.
The Dangers Of MDMA Use
The dangers associated with the use of MDMA and similar drugs are almost endless. Aside from the ever-present risk of heart attack, stroke and overheating, there is the risk of MDMA and alcohol blackout. Using MDMA and drugs like alcohol can be especially dangerous, since the depressive impact of the alcohol can mask the dangers of drug use.
MDMA and alcohol effects are particularly dangerous, but they are not the only risks associated with the use of ecstasy and drugs like it. MDMA also carries a strong risk of addiction, and this risk goes up with every repeated use. Since many MDMA users take it on a weekly basis, the risk of addiction rises ever higher.
